United Way of Horry County Honors Community Leaders at Annual Meeting
United Way of Horry County (UWHC) proudly presented four distinguished awards at its Annual Meeting last month, recognizing the extraordinary individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the community. Each award reflects UWHC’s commitment to building a stronger, more connected Horry County by honoring those who have gone above and beyond in their dedication to service, education, and impact.
Hidden Hero Award – Brent Barker
The Hidden Hero Award is given annually to an individual or organization that works behind the scenes to support UWHC's mission. This year’s recipient, Brent Barker, Manager of Engineering and Fiber Design at HTC, exemplifies the spirit of this award. Brent’s tireless volunteer efforts with UWHC for Day of Caring, his dedication to improving the lives of those around him, and his quiet yet impactful leadership have made a lasting difference in our community. We are honored to recognize Brent as this year’s Hidden Hero.
Difference Maker Award – Crystal McGhee
For over 20 years, Crystal McGhee from the City of North Myrtle Beach has been a cornerstone of UWHC’s efforts. Her leadership and dedication as a campaign manager, along with her continuous involvement in the Day of Caring event, have inspired others and contributed to the success of our organization. Crystal’s unwavering commitment and hands-on involvement, even using personal time off to volunteer, makes her a true ambassador for our cause. UWHC is proud to present the Difference Maker Award to Crystal for her extraordinary service.
Impact Partner Award – Santee Cooper
The Impact Partner Award recognizes an organization that has been instrumental in helping UWHC achieve its mission. Throughout our partnership, Santee Cooper has demonstrated a level of volunteer enthusiasm that is unparalleled in Horry County. Just since 2000, their employees have donated over $2.1 million dollars through their workplace campaign. Their consistent involvement on our Board, Vision Councils, and volunteer events, including Day of Caring, has made a profound difference in our community. Their willingness to answer every call for help exemplifies their commitment to service, collaboration, and impact. UWHC is deeply grateful to Santee Cooper for their continuous dedication to creating positive change.
Mission Ready Champion Educator Award – Katie Stanton
The Champion Educator Award honors a trailblazer in early childhood education, and this year’s recipient, Katie Stanton from The Academy of Hope in Conway, has exceeded expectations through her work with UWHC’s Mission Ready Early Education Initiative and the Heggerty Program. Katie has proven that all children, regardless of background, can thrive when given the right tools and support. Her passion and dedication to ensuring every child reaches their full potential make her a true champion in the classroom and beyond. We are proud to present this year’s Mission Ready Champion Educator Award to Katie Stanton.
