United Way of Horry County Launches “Newcomers United” to Welcome and Engage Transplants in Community Service
Conway, SC (July 28, 2025) — United Way of Horry County (UWHC) is excited to announce the launch of Newcomers United, a new initiative designed to help recent transplants connect with their community through volunteerism, relationship-building, and purposeful engagement.
The kickoff event will be held on Friday, August 8, 2025, from 12:00 to 2:00 PM at the United Way office, located at 761 Century Circle, Conway, SC. Attendees will enjoy refreshments, meet fellow newcomers, learn about United Way’s impact, and explore volunteer opportunities aligned with their interests and skills.
“Newcomers United is about connection—with our neighbors, our community, and our shared future,” said Richard Williams, UWHC’s Director of Education. “We’re seeing more people move to the Grand Strand looking for ways to give back, and this initiative gives them a clear, welcoming place to start.”
The kickoff will feature:
- A “License Plate Mixer” to break the ice and spark conversation,
- A welcome message from UWHC leadership, and
- A Volunteer Opportunity Showcase highlighting ways to get involved.
The group was developed in response to the area’s rapid growth and the increasing number of new residents eager to engage with local causes. Newcomers United offers a friendly and accessible starting point for those who want to contribute their time, talents, or resources to meaningful community work.
Participation is free and open to anyone who has relocated to the area in recent years or is new to volunteering with United Way. UWHC is especially focused on supporting local early-education efforts and promoting kindergarten readiness.
“Whether you’re new to Horry County or just new to giving back, you’re in the right place,” added Williams.
