Radial Gifts City of Conway Historic Steamship Replica of the F.G. Burroughs in Honor of America’s 2
Scale replica of the iconic steamboat to be presented to Mayor Barbara Blain at Conway City Hall on May 18th
CONWAY, S.C. — Radial, a national behavioral health clinic network pioneering the field of brain medicine, today announced it will gift the City of Conway with a handcrafted scale replica of the F.G. Burroughs steamboat, one of the city’s most beloved historical symbols, in celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary. The presentation will take place at Conway City Hall on Monday, May 18th at 4:00 p.m., where the replica will be formally gifted to Mayor Barbara Blain for permanent display.
Franklin G. Burroughs (1834–1897) was a transformative 19th-century business leader whose turpentine, timber, and mercantile enterprise — Burroughs & Collins — shaped the development of Horry County and founded what would become Myrtle Beach. The F.G. Burroughs steamboat, built in 1897, was a 125-foot wood sidewheel vessel and the largest of the Waccamaw Line of Steamships, capable of carrying over 100 passengers and nearly 50 tons of freight. Its image is woven into the fabric of Conway, gracing the city’s famous water tower and downtown murals.
“Conway is community, and when Radial opened our second South Carolina location in Conway, we were overwhelmed with the amount of support,” said Ben Greenzweig, Head of Market Expansion for Radial. “Commissioning and gifting this scale replica of one of Conway’s most iconic, historical artifacts is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to the community.”
The F. G. Burroughs model was crafted by Gregory Buhler, a master model builder and Horry County resident who has spent decades constructing historically accurate scale replicas of legendary vessels including the HMS Bounty, HMS Victory, Titanic, and the Mary Powell. Since retiring as a lawyer and custom home builder and relocating to Horry County in 2022, Buhler has devoted even more of his time to the craft.
“What made this project so challenging, and fun, was that there were no plans I could find in any museum or database for the vessel, and only a few low quality photographs” Buhler said. “The first several months involved significant research on the manufacturing and design, including study of a somewhat similar, famous river steamer, The Planter, whose model currently sits at the Georgetown Maritime Museum. Every piece was hand cut, engineered, and painted to match the very best of what I could determine was the actual steamship.”
The project spanned nearly six months and hundreds of hours of meticulous craftsmanship.
Along with the model, Radial will be presenting a plaque to the City of Conway that is inscribed with the words, “The river carried this town forward. So will we.”
Radial is leading a new field called brain medicine, an approach that moves beyond trial-and-error care by using advanced, evidence-based tools to restore healthy brain function and measure real recovery. Rather than managing symptoms indefinitely, brain medicine targets remission, helping people who haven’t found relief get their lives back.
Radial clinics deliver research-backed treatments including transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), PRISM Neurofeedback for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Spravato for Depression, and more. These FDA-cleared options for depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other conditions work rapidly and are often covered by insurance. Radial currently operates clinics in Myrtle Beach, Conway, Spartanburg, Midtown Manhattan, Williamsburg, Chattanooga, and St. Louis, with additional locations coming online across the nation this year.
