Leadership Conway and Charles B. Jordan Unite for $100,000 Donation to Waccamaw Youth Center
Leadership Conway Class 33 is proud to announce a transformative donation to the Waccamaw Youth Center (WYC), a vital organization dedicated to providing safe housing and support for vulnerable youth in Horry County. The group’s latest initiative, focused on furnishing a newly constructed facility on the WYC campus, has resulted in a $100,000 gift from Charles B. Jordan, a founder of Chancel Construction, Inc.
The building, designed to support young adult males, will serve as a critical transitional space for those
who need additional guidance and resources as they navigate life through and after high school. It will
include a residential space and cafeteria that can transform into a meeting area accessible to all WYC
residents. During a site visit with Executive Director Brandon Oates, members of Leadership Conway
Class 33 were inspired by his vision to extend services for aging-out youth and decided to launch a
community-wide fundraising campaign that began on April 21. This is a part of a year-long project by
members of the Leadership Conway program to support local nonprofits.
Following discussions between Charles and Brandon, it was decided that the new building would be
named in memory of Steve Powell, the founder of Venture Engineering, who passed away on April 29,
2023 after a brave battle with cancer. Though not connected to the donation, Steve had long been a
supporter of WYC - offering his time, services, and resources to its mission.
“It felt like Divine Intervention,” said Brandon Oates, Executive Director of Waccamaw Youth Center.
“Charles’ generosity and Steve’s legacy of service and compassion live on through this gift and naming of
the building.”
To celebrate this extraordinary milestone, WYC will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, May 27
at 11 AM at the new facility. All contributors and community members that have supported this project,
including the Conway Chamber of Commerce Board, are invited to attend.
