United Way of Horry County Offers Free Tax Preparation
 
Conway, SC (February 1, 2023) – United Way of Horry County’s (UWHC) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to provide free tax preparation and electronic filing services to Horry County residents has begun. This year there are four sites for free tax preparation, Conway, Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, and Surfside Beach.
 
VITA sites offer free assistance to people who generally make $60,000 or less. Last year, VITA volunteers provided over 2,400 hours to assist nearly 800 taxpayers filing taxes and receive $1,233,304.00 in returned income credit.
 
UWHC recruits and trains community volunteers to receive IRS tax certification. These volunteers staff VITA sites to assist residents with program eligibility and determine if filers qualify for tax credits such as the EITC and the Child Tax Credit. VITA operates in local libraries to make free tax prep services accessible to individuals and families. On average, American taxpayers spend $220 or more on tax preparation fees. VITA is crucial to individuals with fixed incomes, people with disabilities, and those struggling to make ends meet. VITA allows filers to maximize their refunds through tax credits and avoid preparation and filing fees.
 
Tax assistance is provided by appointments on a first-come, first-served basis at four locations. To schedule an appointment, please call 211 or 864.382.3326 during the hours of 8:30 am - 5:30 pm, Monday - Friday. Calls made outside of business hours can leave a voicemail for a return call. Please know that the appointment center is experiencing a high call volume, and you may experience a wait time.

Those who earned $73,000 or less in 2022 can file taxes online for free through MyFreeTaxes.com.
