Spring Into Reading!
Studies have repeatedly shown that putting books in the hands of children has a meaningful impact on improving literacy. This effort endeavors to reverse the escalating U.S. literary crisis that presently exceeds 30 million American adults unable to read or write above a third-grade level. The more books in or near the home, the more likely a child will learn and love to read. But two out of three children living in poverty have no books to call their own. Further, less than 25 percent of children’s books feature people of color among the characters.
“Literacy is a vital component of our program,” said Wallace Evans, Jr., CEO for A Father’s Place. “Through the last 20-plus years, we have been privileged to help fathers with literacy struggles overcome them and to make better lives for themselves and their families. Fathers also ultimately want their children to have more advantages than they had. Encouraging and providing the tools for positive, true quality time father-child activities is one of the most important ways we help them make that possible for their children. Children who have fathers and mothers that read to them and with them usually become avid readers themselves and are less likely to struggle in school and with employment later in life. Equally important is that we want every child in our community to be able to see themselves in the pages of a book and to provide them with a window into experiences that are different from their own to increase understanding, empathy and inclusion.”
