CCU Fall Commencement Ceremony

CCU to hold three fall commencement ceremonies on Dec. 14

Coastal Carolina University will hold three commencement ceremonies for Fall 2022 graduates on Wednesday, Dec. 14. All events will be held in the HTC Student Recreation and Convocation Center and will also be livestreamed. Approximately 700 students are eligible to participate in the exercises. The ceremonies will feature remarks by President Michael T. Benson, D.Phil. Charles Clary, recipient of the University’s 2022 HTC Distinguished Teacher-Scholar Lecturer Award, will deliver the keynote address. Clary will be introduced by Mateo Solana, president of the Student Government Association.
Clary, who joined the CCU faculty in Fall 2015, serves as an associate professor of studio art and foundations coordinator. He teaches upper-level courses as well as the senior capstone for visual arts majors. He is active in CHROMA, the department’s student art club. Clary has assisted with the museum studies class co-taught by Katie Clary, Ph.D., and Carolyn Dillian, Ph.D., which created two national award-winning exhibits that were displayed at the Horry County Museum: Printing the Past: SC in 3D and Waccamaw Indian People: Past, Present, and Future.

Clary’s work has been exhibited in galleries in Paris, Shanghai, and New York City. In Summer 2022, he was chosen for the prestigious Savannah College of Art and Design Alumni Atelier Ambassador program and held a three-month artist residency in Lacoste, France. Clary recently sold three commissioned pieces to Google corporate offices and is working on a project with Amazon.

The HTC Distinguished Teacher-Scholar Lecturer Award is made possible through a generous donation from Horry Telephone Cooperative. In September, Clary presented his award’s associated lecture, titled “Memento Mori: The Fragility of Life,” which focused on Clary’s loss of his mother and father due to smoking-related cancers.
